What Is Internet Marketing Audit?
It’s an audit of your internet marketing. Simple!
s that all? Well, yes and no…..
Before we start I want you to imagine this scenario. Someone calls out, “I’m looking for a pair of women’s brown, calf-length leather boots”. Now, only the places that have clearly stated they sell women’s brown calf-length leather boots will ever hear that call. AND, depending on your Internet Marketing, of the 200 shops that are able to hear the call, you may find yourself on the fifth or sixth row of shops.
Do you really think a shopper will not find something in the first 4 rows?
This is what its like on Google if you haven’t checked 4 or 5 on all of the boxes below. You don’t stand a chance. And imagine what it would be like if someone shouted “Women’s Shoes”? 2000 shops would answer the call.
When we are taking an offline business online, or are looking at our online business – your website (knowing that you have to be on the internet these days), it’s important that you do an internet marketing audit and then create your internet marketing campaign based on this.
You are where you are and can’t do it all at once, but if you have an audit, you can see your business’ shortcomings and can take the right steps to bring all the weak areas up to speed. We recommend you do one or two things per week and concentrate on them, then take a few days to prepare the next part while you check your stats and so on.
Let’s do a checklist. The following areas are considered standard basics for internet marketing.

Place a tick or cross in the right boxes. Here is a brief explanation of the areas.
- SEO: The start of any internet marketing campaign. This stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is the work on your actual website. Your keywords and phrases are researched in relation to your business and to each and every page. The relevant html tags and copy is edited in line with this. A site map and privacy policy is added and words that are no longer in PR favour are removed
- URL submission: Your website’s url is submitted to the search engines and relevant directories
- List Building: A capture form with appropriate inducements for completing is included on the home page or landing page in order to build a list. An autoresponder account will be needed unless you are fond of a lot of manual work.
- Articles marketing: Regular articles written by you or outsourced are submitted to the thousands of Article Directories. The author has a signature that links back to your site. If the content is valuable this is one of the best ways to get free traffic, but it takes a few weeks for it to kick in.
- Blogs: Similar deal to articles. If you have an interesting blog, you may get fed to others using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and these will all link back to you as well. Comments on others’ blogs count as well.
- Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Diggit and so on…… Blogs and articles are tweeted or written on walls with links back to your site. There is a way now to abbreviate your link so you can add more description. Forums are a part of this area.
- Link Exchange: There are quite a few agencies now where you can exchange links with relevant companies and businesses. These don’t create as higher rank as before because everyone started exchanging ridiculous links but a number of relevant links help.
- PPC/PPV Campaigns: These are the ones that cost money. If you want instant traffic this is the way to go but careful, if not managed correctly can prove very costly.
- Business Networks: There are a number of these around. Some a merely a load of businesses trying to sell to you so no-one buys but the better ones can create business opportunities and referrals.
- Online Advertising: This can work if it is maintained as an ongoing cost on somewhere like gumtree. One ad gets buried quite quickly, but these ads are search engine indexed so will probably come up on Google higher than your business! Another way is a permanent ad on Ebay.
Well, there you are. Just a little reminder of what you need and what you should be doing on a very regular basis. Companies like ours do this for small businesses so they can focus on their core areas. On the internet you are in an extremely competitive market, so you MUST complete the basic internet marketing steps to have a remote chance – or get someone to do it for you. It is the only key to success.
Never give up!
