If you have been marketing online for a period of time, you would know that a very useful free tool for doing keyword research is Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool.
With this tool, you can generate a list of relevant keywords in your target niche. Using this list, you can achieve the following:
- Build long-tailed Adsense sites (I do this)
- Add to your Pay-Per-Click campaign using those long-tailed keywords to lower your cost
- Do SEO on your website to pull in more traffic (I love this part)
- Do market research to test if your product has a potential buying target (ie. people must be searching for it in order for them to buy it)
- … and much more
Regardless what I’m using keyword research for, I loosely follow a basic procedure. This workflow can be crudely explained as:
- I start with my first-level keyword
- I assess difficulty (number of competitors)
- I assess profitability (number of searches)
- I look for long-tailed keywords
- I digged further
- I combined and come up with a final list.
The whole process takes me about 1 to 2 hours.
For a few years, Overture tool was heavily used. Several other sites were also built to pull data from its database.
However, recently you would notice that Overture database has NOT be updated since January 2007. The data is now getting pretty old and dated.
Recently a few readers has emailed me (who has downloaded my previous keyword research tool) and asked if there are any good alternatives. Well, I am here to say … YES.

I came across this disturbing report “Google Proxy Hacking: How A Third Party Can Remove Your Site From Google SERPs” from the guys at Stompernet and I must say this “bug” in Google could spell possibly many dollar-loss for eCommerce and Adsense sites.
Below is an extract from that post:
My friend Brad Fallon had been having some troubles with Google, and one of his web sites, My Wedding Favors. In June of 2006, after exhausting all of his other options, Brad (who knows his way around SEO) hired me to direct his search marketing efforts and, in simple terms “figure out what the hell is going on with Google …
The first thing I discovered was that he wasn’t “banned,” but that Google was indexing everything on his site except for the home page. It took about two weeks of research and testing before I developed a working theory. When we searched Google for phrases that should have been completely unique to the My Wedding Favors home page, we kept finding a particular kind of duplicate content: … proxies
Basically what this technical report says is:
- Some backhat hackers are using proxies servers to capture high-ranking keywords in the search engine. In this process, they replaced the authentic website with their own website links.

- It provides possible solutions to 3 different situations that you might have.
So how does this impact you?
Go and check for your website in the search engine to see if your ranking for your primary keywords is still in the first few pages of Google.
If it is not and if you see some links like the following pointing back to your site
www.example.com/nph-proxy.pl/011110A/http/www.wealthmountains.com/news
this means your site has been a target by the proxies hackers. You could be lossing traffic due to this!
Don’t worry. Go and read “Google Proxy Hacking: How A Third Party Can Remove Your Site From Google SERPs” and apply what they suggested to combat this now.
