According to legend, in ancient China, the nián (年), a man-eating beast from the mountains, could silently infiltrate houses to prey on humans. The people later learned that the nian was sensitive to loud noises and the color red, so they scared it away with explosions, fireworks and the liberal use of the color red. These customs led to the first New Year celebrations. Guò nián (过年), which means to celebrate the new year, literally means the passing of the nian beast.

The Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) is just around the corner starting from 17 Feb 2007.  This big holiday is expected to last for 15 days (in some Chinese community).

1. The One-Minute Thought

Jan 2007 was a busy month for my family as we were preparing for the coming Chinese New Year in Feb 2007. 

To my non-Chinese friends, Chinese New Year (CNY) is a big holiday to Chinese that can last up to 15 days.  This is the day where family members gathered to eat dinner together and give the young ones hao pao (that is red packet with money) .  There are many other traditions to follow during this day

One of the tradition is the clearing of old redundant stuff so that we can welcome the new year with a fresh start. 

To tie back to your own goals, have you done an assessment recently on which of your goals need to be reviewed again?  Which ones you need to focus on?  If not, then perhaps now is the time to start.

As Stephen Pierces once told us in a seminar, don’t hold back and think too much, act!
