The Family CFO

The Family CFO: The Couple's Business Plan for Love and Money
By Mary Claire Allvine and Christine Larson
276 pages

Money is the single leading cause of fights among engaged couples and those in their first marriage, according to experts.

Money fights are more intensely negative than other arguments, and couples find it difficult to talk about or agree on money issues.

The authors of this book have suggested a unqiue ways to get around this problem.

Starting with the surprising but sensible idea that households should operate like corporations, certified financial planner Allvine and journalist Larson provide simple and fast rules for couples to effectively merge and manage their assets and liabilities.

Using plenty of anecdotes and language that is accessible to readers who don't have a background in economics, the authors outline a handful of business concepts that can also be incorporated into everyday domestic partnerships.

For example, just as companies convene boards of directors to set forth organizational objectives, couples can act as directors of their own boards to "identify and prioritize their short- and long-term goals."

Just as companies employ cash and investment managers to oversee their books, couples should act as accountants, generating and updating regular reports on their personal cash flow and net worth.

The first section of this book focuses on the steps a couple needs to get their family CFO system in place, while the second section is chockful of case studies, including details on the steps some couples have taken to find a solution.

The authors has also included worksheet as such "The Family CFO Home Buying Worksheet" and "The Family CFO Kids' Cost Worksheet". However, I do not find this to be of practical use if the reader is averse to money matter.

Nevertheless, get a copy of this book "The Family CFO: The Couple's Business Plan for Love and Money" now and organise your family finances like a business plan.
